FEBRUARY 06: FC United has completed the signing of defender Michael Essien from Fulham for an undisclosed fee.

Fulham have released the 23-year-old following his loan spell at Brighton & Bristol City.

Essien scored 11 goals in 24 appearances last season for the Championship side, earning him his first call-up to the England senior squad.

He joined Fulham on loan last summer and made two appearances for the club during their relegation from the Championship in May.

United have made an enquiry for former Fulham striker Daniel Sturridge to replace Essien at right-back this season.

“Michael has played in both the Championship and Premier League for Fulham,” the club said in a statement.

The defender has made 11 appearances for United since making his debut in 2011, scoring seven goals.

At 23, Essien is a long-term option for the Old Trafford outfit and United are hoping to add another young talent to their squad next summer.
